Teach Us to Pray

Our job is simply to respond in faith and receive God as “my Father in heaven”

Prayer and Our Relationship with God
Drawing of the Father

Scripture Reading: John 6:43-51

Key Verse: John 6:44

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Jesus is clear about the work of our Father in heaven. Our Key Verse speaks of the work of drawing (enticing) people to Jesus. Our Father cares so deeply about every single person that He determines to draw all people everywhere to His son Jesus. John 6:45 quotes the Old Testament prophecy: “they will all be taught by God.” No one will leave this earthly existence without being drawn to the real and living God. That is His promise to all of us.

After the Father does His work, verse 45 goes on to explain our responsibility: “Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to me (Jesus).” All will hear, but not all will respond with faith. The drawing work of the Father starts as a seed and then grows in our hearts and minds as we respond. At first, there is little understanding of who or what is wooing us to Jesus. The Father’s drawing slowly unfolds into full revelation of the good news of the Gospel.

When we pray, we are to start with the Father, our Father in heaven. It is the recognition that everything started and continues to start in Him! We would not have come to faith without Him. We would not have any desire for prayer without Him. We would not have known what to pray without Him. Yes, our Father did it all for us. He lavished His love on us! Our job is simply to respond in faith and receive Him as “my Father in heaven.”

Father, I acknowledge you as the giver of all good gifts. I am saved because of you and I am blessed because of you. With deep gratitude I say, ‘My Father in heaven.’ In Jesus’ Name, amen.
