The Cross is an Obstacle

We have no obligation to follow the leadings of our sinful nature

An Obstacle to Indulgence
Our Obligation – Part 2

Scripture Reading:  Romans 8:12-17

Key Verse: Romans 8:12

Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation–but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.

The Apostle Paul uses the word obligation to remind us of the debt we owe.  He reminds us that we owe nothing to the sinful nature.  Our fleshly desires have done nothing for us except cause havoc in our lives.  Our sinful nature causes us to fight battles with our loved ones that shouldn’t be fought.  It causes us to spend money that should not be spent.  The sinful nature tempts us to wreck our influence and integrity.  We have no obligation to follow the leadings of our sinful nature.

But for us who have believed in the Gospel, we have been redeemed and brought into the family of God.  We have a huge obligation to walk worthy of that calling.  The Apostle Paul wrote: “And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10).

Indeed, the cross of Christ is an obstacle to the indulgences of our flesh!  We simply cannot continue living any way we choose without any consideration of what God’s Word teaches us and God’s Spirit impresses upon us!  It is our obligation to listen carefully to our inner spirit, God’s “still small voice,” that whispers correction and guidance to those who are His children!

Father, I am determined to listen and obey your voice today.  I will walk worthy of you, as your Spirit helps me.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
