The Cross is an Obstacle

The cross causes inconvenient obstacles for one who would follow Christ

An Obstacle to Indulgence
Nail It – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:19-26

Key Verse: Galatians 5:24 NLT

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

This month we are going to consider the intrusive nature of the cross of Jesus Christ.  We often speak of this cross of Christ in terms of endearment.  As Christ followers we have such affection to this cross that we have talked about and created songs about, however, we must understand that this same cross causes great and very inconvenient obstacles for one who would follow Christ.

An obstacle is something that hinders us or blocks a path we want to travel.  It is far more of a frustration than a pleasantry.  I want to remind us this month that if we understood the cross correctly, it would be looked at as a hindrance or frustration to us (our flesh).  We read in the scriptures a phrase translated in English to “sinful nature.”  The Greek word used by the authors was “sarx.”  It is properly translated “flesh” as well as sinful nature.  When the translators used “sinful nature” they were using a phrase that describes the flesh.  The scripture is referring to the sensual nature of man.  It is not particularly sinful in and of itself but is prone to sin.  The sensual nature of man leads us easily into disobedience to the known will of God.

The scriptures are clear on what we are to do with this sensual nature, once we become Christ followers. (Continued)

Father, help me to understand what the cross should mean to my daily walk with you.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
