In Your Anger – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:25-32

Key Verse: Ephesians 4:26

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry

In Ephesians 4:29, the apostle describes the most common way that people sin in their anger: unwholesome talk. Think with me about wholesome talk and how it brings a healthy atmosphere to a home. A definition of wholesome says it is “conducive to moral or general well-being; beneficial, wholesome environment” (dictionary.com). In a person’s anger words are often said that destroy the moral atmosphere. An angry person, if they are not very careful, will say words that deeply hurt the well-being of all those around them.

Have you sinned in your anger lately? When you think about it, we cannot truly stop our emotions from forming. We may not even know why we feel angry. Whether it’s the emotions of love or anger, the only thing we can truly control is how we express them! We can and must control the words we use while we are angry. When we realize we are using words that are unwholesome, we can and must stop! I often hear people say, “I just can’t help myself.” It simply isn’t true—they stop themselves all the time. They don’t blast their boss with angry words. When we truly want to, we can. The key for all of us is keeping the “want to” at home! (Continued)

Father, I want my words today to be wholesome; building people up, not tearing them down. Help me! In Jesus’ name, amen.
