Jesus Works at Home – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5-11

Key Verse: Philippians 2:5-7

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.

If following Jesus’ model doesn’t work at home, then our marriages are, indeed, in trouble. But I have found that His model is more than adequate to make my marriage what it ought to be. It not easy to follow Jesus’ model, but it does work when we do!

I changed our suggested additional reading to required reading just for the next three days. That entire passage clearly describes the model of Jesus and the victory that results from living it out! Let’s look at the model that will revolutionize our marriages.

First, Jesus made Himself nothing. Jesus who deserved the rule of the Universe, took upon Himself a role that denied Himself that position. He chose to think of us more than He thought of Himself. He sacrificed that which would feel good to Him to make it possible for us to feel good about ourselves. His love for us made that decision, not His personal preference nor our wonderful nature. We earned nothing — Jesus deserved everything, yet Jesus was willing to make Himself nothing!

Can we make a similar decision to make ourselves less important than our spouse? When we follow our model, we can and must! Each day we can decide that our spouse — undeserving as they are — will take the top spot in our eyes! That’s a choice; it will change everything. Jesus did it for us. Pass it on! Father, I won’t have the will or the strength to follow Jesus’ model unless you come upon me today. I will trust you and your help. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
