Making the Deal
Foundation
Scripture Reading: Luke 6:46-49
Key Verse: Luke 6:48
He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
This familiar story, reduced too often to a story for our children, teaches us more about “making the deal” with God. We are being challenged to dig deep and lay the foundation of our lives on a rock. The rock which is Christ Jesus. Jesus is teaching that as we study His words and put them into practice, we are laying that foundation for our lives.
It is also true that when we hear God’s Word (the Bible) and don’t respond with action, we are like the man who builds his house on sand. Lacking a solid foundation, it won’t take much of a storm to wash away this house. The home looks good for a while, but ultimately the weak foundation that was hidden becomes apparent when the storms come.
Jesus is reminding us that, from the exterior, we can look good. Both houses, in Jesus’ illustration, looked the same to the people passing by. As we look around the church, it’s easy to believe that everyone is looking good and doing fine. We are all looking much the same in our worship, singing, and public praying forms.
When trials come, when heartache hits, we will start seeing the true foundational work in each person’s life. Do you have a strong foundation? According to our scripture for today, you do if you are doing all you know to do to apply God’s Word to your life! None of us feel we do it as well as we want to, but we who are sincerely trying, are building our lives on the Rock: Jesus Christ!
Father, open my eyes to any area of my life that doesn’t match up with your eternal truth. I want a strong foundation built under me! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
