Life’s Choices
The Options – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Matthew 10:24-31
Key Verse: Matthew 10:39
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Jesus presented His “would be” followers a clear understanding of the options they had. In today’s scripture, Jesus told them that they could save their life now and lose it later or lose their life now and save it eternally. What was Jesus teaching?
First option — and that which takes little faith — is to find (save) your life now. That means work on the immediate needs of your life; focus on yourself and your interests, your passions, your energy on the life that you see before you. This deals with the physical; not worrying about the invisible. This concerns itself with the mortal; not fretting over the immortal. Finding your life now means live for the moment, let eternity wait. Jesus is saying that this lifestyle is a good way to lose your life in the end. Life passes by us quickly. Is it truly a good deal to focus only on the immediate?
Second option — and this option must take the risk of faith — it says: live more for eternity, not so much for the now! Say no to pleasures that are ungodly so that we can enjoy the godly for eternity. “Lose your life now” means putting your future at a higher value than your present. This is risky. At least it feels that way at first. The unbeliever’s question is: “Will the reward really be worth it?” Giving up all my selfish ways for the “deal” God is offering does take a step of faith!
Father, the worldly offerings seem so enticing at times. Please grant me clarity of mind and strength of character to make the best choice! In Jesus’ Name, amen.
