God’s Mercy assumption is: that we should be living a life of joy

Rich in Mercy

Scripture: Ephesians 2:4-5

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.

I recently listened to a news report of an individual who donated $200,000,000 to a project that he obviously believed in. The fact that he had that much to donate and still had plenty left to enjoy a life of luxury boggled my mind. There is no doubt that this man is rich in this world’s wealth!

Today’s scripture reminds us that God is rich…rich in mercy! He has an abundance to share with whomever He chooses! God decided to give us a share in this wealth of mercy. Our passage of scripture goes a step further and lets us know why God made this decision: “because of His great love for us”! Left to ourselves, we are dead in our transgressions. God took action on our part and made us alive with Christ. No matter how hard a person tries to understand this picture, it keeps coming back to pure “mercy”!

The writers of the New Testament have an underlying assumption when they speak of God’s grace, mercy and love. This assumption is: that we should be living a life of joy. This is difficult for many of us. We were raised on the “earn it” plan. As children, we were rewarded when we were good and punished when we were bad. This cycle was repeated so often, it’s ingrained into our life. As we turn to God, His plan is the “Unmerited Plan” …saturated in mercy! Let’s determine to honor God’s plan by living a life of simple gratitude and praise!

Father, I will rejoice and live a happy life today. Your mercy is worthy of that and more! In Jesus’ name, amen.
