Praise Him with a Humble Heart
Looking for Honor – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Luke 14:5-14
Key Verse: Luke 14:11
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Continuing from yesterday’s devotional, let me ask: Are you looking for honor? It is not wrong to enjoy being honored or the thought of being honored. God created us in a way that honor can be given to a deserving person and it will honor them! In other words, we were built by God so that we enjoy being honored!
The problem comes when we allow our enjoyment of honor to control how we live our lives. If we start seeking honor, people around us won’t want to give it to us. Pride destroys the chances for anyone to truly be honored. Even in our pagan society, it is the humble person that receives authentic honor. Pride-filled people might win trophies but they won’t be given honor from anybody’s heart.
Our scripture for yesterday’s and today’s devotionals reminds us that God wants to give honor to us, as well. As Christ followers, we ought to want His honor more than anybody else’s. God wants to exalt people, but He won’t exalt people who are prideful. It is the humble that are exalted. As you live out your day today, be careful not to “look for honor.” Rather, look for places that you can humbly serve others. Look for places that you can make others feel better—exalt them. Let God exalt you in His own way.
Father, remind me when you see me seeking honor. Help me live humbly today. Help me put others first. In Jesus’ name, amen.
