Humble people know they need more than themselves to succeed in life

Praise Him with a Humble Heart
Who God Supports – Part 1

Scripture Reading:  Psalm 147:1-7

Key Verse: Psalm 147:6

The Lord sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.

This month’s devotional is all about praise.  It is entitled: “Ways of Praise!”  Our Psalm for today starts by reminding us how good it is to sing praises to our God.  The psalmist continues to tell us the reasons for praising God: He builds up Jerusalem; He heals the broken hearted; He determines the number of stars and calls them by name—great is our Lord and mighty in power.  There is no limit to the reasons we ought to praise our Lord.

When we get to verse six, the Psalmist wants us to understand who God supports: The humble.  The Hebrew word used is “anav” and has a literal meaning of poor, humble, afflicted, and meek.  In other words, people who know they need more than themselves to succeed in life!  The NIV translates this verse as “God sustains the humble.”  Several other translations use the word “supports” rather than sustains.  Both words let us know that God is on the side of the humble.

This week we will be looking at other verses of the Old and New Testament that speak of humility.  The Bible is very clear:  God supports the humble.  The Bible tells us that God “detests all the proud of heart…” (Psalm 16:50.  The humble live life dependent on God; the proud live life independently!  The humble know they need God to help them; the proud believe they can make it on their own.  God supports the humble.  Do you need His support?

Father, forgive my pride when I depend on myself rather than you!  I desperately need you today to sustain me.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
