Jesus reminded those on His left that they had ignored the hungry

It Affects Eternity
Those on His Left – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:42-46

Key Verse: Matthew 25:41

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Jesus turns the story toward those on His left in our printed key verse for today.  Those on His left are not atheists, they undoubtedly believe in a God.  However, in their daily lifestyles they made Him an irrelevant God.  Their belief in God did not change the way they treated people in their lives.  They saw life as a game to accumulate as much stuff for themselves as possible.  To serve others was not on their daily radar.  Their surprise at being rejected on the final judgment day tells me they probably practiced some religious activities.  In their mind, being religious was of utmost importance.

Jesus reminded those on His left that they had ignored the hungry, thirsty, lonely, needy, sick, and those in prison.  They couldn’t understand how this was essential to godly living.  I can imagine their minds were spinning with excuses for their selfish behavior.  Didn’t Jesus understand how busy they were?

Again, when Jesus made it personal, saying it was Him that was hungry and needy, they quickly yelled back: “When did we see you hungry or needy?  I think their response was very normal.  Who would ever ignore Jesus’ needs?  Jesus pointed them to the fact that to ignore people He loved so deeply was to ignore Him!  (Continued)

Father, I want to see Jesus’ face in every person I meet today.  Holy Spirit, help me to remember you deeply love them!  In Jesus’ name, amen.
