Sunday Morning Worship
October 7, 2012
Series: “Hunger is Not a Game”
Today: “It is an Injustice”
Scripture: Isaiah 58:5-7 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?
6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter– when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Intro: Isaiah was then instructed to answer the question that the people of God were asking: “Why do we fast and you don’t look our way… you don’t seem to notice …”
I. DO WE WANT TO KNOW IF GOD HAS A PROBLEM WITH US?
* I don’t want to stand before Him someday and find out I’ve missed the point .
II. DOES GOD LIKE OUR STYLES AND HABITS OF WORSHIPPING HIM?
A. Isaiah was not to proclaim that their worship style was wrong. He was to proclaim that they were not blending their worship style with their lifestyle .
B. He is concerned about what prayer and Bible study does for your lifestyle .
III. DOES GOD CLEARLY TELL US HOW TO SPEND OUR LIVES ?
A. Verse 6: Loose the chains of injustice …set the oppressed free .
B. Isaiah 58:7 – Feed the hungry , provide shelter and clothes.
Conclusion: We live our lives, spending $700 billion on entertainment every year!
* What’s God’s problem?
His people often give Him worship but skip the service to people that He loves!
