To delay that gratification means I trust that God’s way will be better

How to Be Blessed By God
Obey Like Rahab

Scripture: Joshua 2:1

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.

Joshua sent spies into the land, especially to look around Jericho.  They ended up in the house of a woman named Rahab.  After hiding them from her own townspeople as well as Jericho’s king, she asked the spies to spare her and her family’s life when they came back to conquer Jericho.  The spies made a pact with her.  If she would not send Jericho’s armies after them as they returned to Joshua to give their report, she would live.  She let them down the wall with a rope and off the spies went – back to Joshua.  Now Rehab had to decide…would she keep her word or trust the walls of Jericho and the king and his armies?  She didn’t know Joshua or the God of the children of Israel.  She did know the height of the city walls and the Jericho army that had fought to protect the city many times before.  Rehab decided to obey the covenant she had made with the spies and believe their word that they would spare her life!

In many ways, we, like Rahab, must make that decision almost every day of our lives.  God’s blessings are promised, but will they truly come through?  The worldly rewards usually seem so immediate and sure.  Should we obey the Bible and give up these worldly enjoyments?  Will it really be worth it?  The gratification that my flesh cries out for seems so strong – so urgent!  To delay that gratification means I trust that God’s way will bring me long term fulfillment!  Rahab found out after a few days of waiting that she had made the right choice!  So will you!

“Father, the battle is heated, nearly every day.  Remind me – often – that you’re right and worthy to be followed.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
