Broken Self-Worth
Great Love – Part 2
Scripture Reading: 1 John 3:2-10
Key Verse: 1 John 3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
We know from yesterday’s devotional that God our Father always gives us His great love. When we truly understand that, our self-worth ought to go through the roof! The God of the universe loves us with the highest quality of love possible!
But the Apostle John doesn’t stop with the quality of love; he also wants us to consider the quantity of our heavenly Father’s love for us. The NIV translation says: “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us…” Have you ever lavished someone with love, gifts or your time? If so, you can start to understand what John is describing. The quantity of love the Father wants to give us is mind boggling. It is so amazing that people struggle to believe it. I would imagine you have struggled to truly believe in this lavish love. We have an especially hard time trusting it when we feel so unworthy of it. When we feel we’ve blown it in some situation, we can’t imagine our Father in heaven loving us with this lavish love! Yet, the scripture is written under the careful inspiration of God’s Holy Spirit upon these writers. They were never allowed to exaggerate any truth. Your Father lavishes you with His great love—all the time! This lavish love resulted in us being called “children of God.” Your worth to God has been demonstrated in the quality and quantity of His love for you!
Father, today I will walk with my head held high, trusting that your great love has been lavished upon me! In Jesus’ name, amen.
