The One Day Fast

Scripture Reading:  Jeremiah36:1-7

Key Verse: Jeremiah 36:6

So you go to the house of the Lord on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll the words of the Lord that you wrote as I dictated. Read them to all the people of Judah who come in from their towns.

In this chapter of Jeremiah we are reading of a time when God’s people were to take a day to do some self-examination.  They were to repent of any known sins that they were committing, believing God would have mercy on them and forgive them.  As they gathered for this day of fasting, they were to listen to God’s Word being read to them.  From the reading they would become knowledgeable of how to please God in their lifestyles.

A one day fast is an excellent way to do a review of our spiritual lives, as well as seek God’s favor.  All of us know that one day we will stand before God for our final review.  It seems to make sense that we would want to prepare properly for that final review by doing self-examination once in a while.  It is not easy to slow our lives down long enough to truly examine the moral areas of our lives; to look deep into our motivations, making sure we are serving God for all the right reasons.  This review is an important part of our spiritual discipline whether we add fasting to it or not.

God is pleased when we get serious about seeking Him.  When we show our sincerity about walking worthy of Him, it opens our lives to His work in us.  Add fasting to your spiritual disciplines.

Father, I am so grateful that you enabled me to believe and follow you!  I want to walk worthy of your call on my life!  In Jesus’ name, amen.
