Direction from God – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Acts 13:1-5

Key Verse: Acts 13:2

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

I long to have direction in my life from the Holy Spirit.  How about you?  I don’t feel smart enough or talented enough to accomplish the tasks in this life.  I need direction to be a good spouse, parent and employee.  I sense the tendency in me to slide through life without really doing anything that would cause me to desperately need power beyond myself.  If you feel that way as well, let’s follow the model of this Antioch church.  Let’s imitate the practices of those believers and believe God will give us direction like He did for them!

To start fasting we must decide the method of fasting we will use.  Some of these believers did a complete or total fast.  Some practiced a partial fast where they ate some food but gave up a part of their normal meal.  The length of the fasts found in scripture varies as well.  If you plan to fast often, such as weekly, fasting one meal is often used.  If your thought is to fast for some specific purpose that will probably only be a onetime event, you may want to fast for several days.  Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any fast, especially if you are on medications that might be affected.  Fasting is an effective spiritual discipline that our Lord honors as we seek direction in our lives.

Father, grant me wisdom and courage as I walk with you.  When I fast, please grant me direction from the Holy Spirit.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
