Learn the joys of being a contributor, not just a consumer

Consumers vs. Contributors
Sowing Generously – Part 1

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 9:6

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

I was in my car listening to the Christian radio station that I had listened to faithfully for a couple of years.  Since this station does not use advertisers, it raises pledges annually to keep itself in business.  I had heard them raise money before but had never given anything to this station.  However, this particular day it hit me, I was being a consumer of their product, but not a contributor.  I started making a small monthly donation.

When I go into a restaurant or a department store, I expect to pay for what I consume.  Why do people feel it is odd to think in terms of contributing to a church in which they consume spiritual food?  Yes, the church needs money to operate, just like other businesses in town.  There is an old saying that is popular yet today: “All the church wants is your money.”  Interestingly, the preachers I know are afraid to talk about money.  Most congregations hear very few messages about money because of the fear that someone will accuse them of “just wanting their money.”

Don’t be a consumer only in your church.  Learn the joys of being a contributor as well.  Our scripture reminds us that if we give generously, we will reap generously.  When you try it and trust God to be faithful to His promises, you will enjoy it and become the cheerful giver God loves!

Father, I know I cannot out give you.  You have been so generous with me; help me to be a joy filled contributor to your kingdom.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
