Exploiters vs. Embracers
Embracing Jesus – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:17-21
Key Verse: Matthew 19:22
When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
As we continue looking at this rich young man that came seeking eternal life, we must be careful not to make it all about money. God’s interaction with His people has made it clear that He is not against money; He uses money to bless His people. However, God is against money becoming the dominant factor in our passions. Money is not the only thing that can squeeze God out of the dominant place in our hearts. To embrace Jesus means to “set apart Christ as Lord” in our hearts (1 Peter 3:15).
The Bible describes Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords. To embrace Jesus, we must surrender to His Lordship. We must trust His wisdom and His love for us. That trust must be so solid that nothing He asks us for is too much! This young man in our scripture couldn’t trust that Jesus knew best! He said he wanted eternal life; doesn’t everyone? Coming face to face with the Author of eternal life, he just could not part with the love of his life: money.
Has Jesus asked you to part with anything that has become really important to you? Sometimes it is something that has become an addiction as far as the level of love you have for it! Are you willing to embrace Jesus and make Him Lord of your life?
Father, I am listening. Please speak clearly to me on any matters of my heart. I want you to be Lord over me! In Jesus’ name, amen.
