Embracing Jesus takes much more than obeying rules

Exploiters vs. Embracers
Embracing Jesus – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:17-21

Key Verse: Matthew 19:22

When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

I think we would like this young man that had come to Jesus in John 19.  I think that if he would walk into our churches today everyone would open their arms to him.  He was careful to obey all the Ten Commandments, according to his own testimony in John 19:20.  He must have been a bright business man; he had already accumulated a lot of money.  Though the scripture does not tell us, my guess is he was faithful to tithe his money, since he was careful to obey all the other commands.  Yes, he would be well liked in church circles I am sure!

Unfortunately, Jesus could see what no other could see: This young man’s divided heart.  It was not that he didn’t love God; he did.  The problem was he didn’t love God with all his heart, soul and mind!  He had allowed money to creep into a prominent spot in his heart.  So prominent that it rivaled God’s place!  Jesus knew that, for the young man, the only cure was for him to go sell all his possessions—give the proceeds to the poor—then come follow Jesus!  That was too much to ask and he walked away sad!

Embracing Jesus takes much more than obeying rules and looking spiritual.  Jesus didn’t come to earth for more of that kind of religion.  He wants our hearts.  (Continued)

Father, I want to embrace Jesus.  Please show me any areas where I fall short.  I ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
