The Bible makes two claims about knowing God

Sunday Morning Worship
March 25, 2012
Series: “Basic”
Today: “Turning Talking into Walking”

Scripture:  1 John 2:3-6 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

1 John 2:9-11 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.  10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.

Intro:  The Bible makes two claims about       knowing          God.

1 John 2:4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

* If you choose to believe the Bible, you are confronted with these two truths:

a.         Walk        like Jesus did.

b.         Obey        what Jesus said.

I.    LOVE       GOD          .

John 17:25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.

* If we are going to walk as Jesus walked, we are going to have tohave an        intimate relationship        with God.

Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

1 John 5:3 This is love for God: to obey his commands.

II.   LOVE ALL       PEOPLE        .

1 John 2:9-10 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.

III.  LOVE IN         ACTION         .

1 John 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

* This last principle pushes us from what we        feel         to what we        do        about our love for people.

Conclusion:  Let’s all repeat our mission statement:       Love God! Love all people! Love in action       !
