Evidence of the Spirit – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:22-25

Key Verse: Galatians 5:25

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Yesterday’s devotional started looking at the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit as it lives in us.  Fruit, when you think of it in this way, is the outward, observable evidence of what kind of tree it is.  As we continue to look at the fruits of the Spirit, think of it as the outward, observable evidence of your daily life that Christ lives in you.  We looked at the first four yesterday.  Today we start with the fruit of kindness.  Kindness is a simple concept to understand but not always easy to demonstrate.  Kindness must not be reserved for those who we determine deserve it or have shown kindness to us.  As Christ followers, we must be determined to show kindness to everyone we come into contact with, starting in our homes!

The next fruit Paul mentions is goodness—a word referring to our moral character.  Our challenge is to be good when people are watching and to be good when no one is around.  We must remember, God is always watching.  Faithfulness is another fruit that Paul lists.  This quality brings consistency to our lives, fighting the tendency of flip flopping or allowing our moods to control us.  Let’s determine to be faithful in our walk with God.  Gentleness and self-control go together well and are the last two fruits listed.  It takes self-control for most people to remain gentle.  We can be steadfast and firm in our beliefs and still remain gentle.  Ask God for His Spirit of self-control for your life today!

Father, I want my life to shine bright for you.  Show me any hindrances to the Spirit’s work that I may be allowing.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
