Series: “Basic”
Today: “Trust the Holy Spirit”

Scripture:  John 3:7-8 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Galatians 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Intro:  We dare not try to put God or His Holy Spirit in a      box       .

I.    WHAT DOES THE SPIRIT DO FOR      ALL       ?

A.   The Spirit is working in us all before we       believe       .

John 3:5-6 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

John 16:8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment

B.   The Spirit guides all        believers           into all truth.

John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

C.  The Spirit provides        power        for daily living.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

D.  The Spirit        equips        us to fulfill our purpose.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

E.   The Spirit        strengthens         us in our weaknesses.

Romans 8:26a In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

F.   The Spirit          intercedes          for us.

Romans 8:27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.

II.   WHAT WE MUST DO FOR THE SPIRIT.

A.   We must       live         by the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

B.   Do not       grieve        the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

C.  Don’t be        controlled         by your human nature.

Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

Conclusion:  We have all the advantages the disciples had when Jesus was physically with them.

Galatians 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Romans 8:9b And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
