Going to a Bible study is not the end; it is a means to the end

Follow Jesus
Why Call Him Lord? – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Luke 6:43-49

Key Verse: Luke 6:46

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Continuing yesterday’s devotional thoughts, Jesus did not stop with the picture of the solid foundation for our spiritual house.  Jesus wanted to be completely clear, so He painted the second picture: The house built on the ground without a deep foundation.  This house, Jesus said, would collapse as the storms of life hit.  What group of people was Jesus referring to in this picture: Those who hear His words but do not put them into practice.

Sometimes I wonder if the church offers too many Bible studies.  Sometimes it feels that the message might be: this is the end game—goal accomplished.  Going to a Bible study is not the end; it is a means to the end.  The end or goal is to actually live out on a daily basis these truths we learn in Bible study.  No one gets “brownie points” in heaven because they attend church or a Bible study.  The point of all of it is so that Christ can shine bright in your words and behavior throughout your day.

Will you follow Jesus today?  When your spouse irritates you, will you follow Jesus today?  When you get frustrated on your commute or at work today, will you act like Jesus?  In all our ways, let’s be Christ followers today!

Father, I will need your Holy Spirit to remind me to fight off my flesh, so that I can walk in step with you today!  In Jesus’ name, amen.
