Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?”

Follow Jesus
Why Call Him Lord? – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Luke 6:43-49

Key Verse: Luke 6:46

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

The title of this week’s theme is, “Follow Jesus.” Jesus realized that some would “talk” like they are followers but they would never really follow.  In our scripture passage for today, Jesus asked this question: Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?”  In other words, Jesus was not interested in people filling their heads with religious teachings if it did not lead to a transformed lifestyle.

This concept of actually following Jesus was so critical in Jesus’ mind that He pushed His listeners further.  Jesus said, “I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice” (Luke 6:47). Jesus goes on to paint the picture of a man building a house on a deep and solid foundation; then a flood can come and this house continues to stand firm.

If Jesus physically visited you today and reviewed the last 12 months of your spiritual journey, would He liken it to this house on a solid foundation?  Would He see that you have read and studied His words?  Would He see that you demanded changes in your personal behavior because of what you read and studied?  A good exercise might be to take a pen and paper and write down some behavior changes that happened during the last 12 months because of Jesus’ words.

Father, I open my life to you for review.  Show me if there are any offensive ways in me.  I want to be transformed into your image.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
