Follow Jesus
The Call – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Mark 1:14-20
Key Verse: Mark 1:17
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
As we continue from yesterday’s devotional thoughts, I want to look at the practical matters of following the call. What will it look like for us today to hear and follow? Will we leave our secular lives and follow Jesus like Simon, Andrew, James, and John did when they heard the call?
First, we will all leave the secular way of doing life. We will no longer separate or compartmentalize life. Our journey with Jesus is all consuming. We no longer see it as a religion, but rather a moment by moment relationship. These disciples had the privilege of physically walking with Jesus over the next three years of their lives. When we start our journey walking with Jesus, the Holy Spirit invades our being. We walk with Jesus 24/7 for the rest of our lives. Even when we think we are alone, He is there watching over us.
Second, when we hear His call, we are to leave the old life of sinful behavior. These disciples would learn a lot over the next three years of their lives. Jesus would teach them appropriate behavior in the kingdom of God. As we respond to God’s call, we will slowly learn what behaviors must be dropped and what behaviors must be added to our lives. It is a lifetime of learning and growing into kingdom people.
Father, I want to be coachable as I walk with you. Show me your ways and I will follow. I ask this all in Jesus’ name, amen.
