To follow Jesus is to think of others

Follow Jesus
The Call – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:14-20

Key Verse: Mark 1:17

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

In our scripture reading for today, we read of Jesus’ call to follow Him.  Simon and his brother Andrew were first to receive the call.  They did not hesitate to drop everything and follow.  It was not long until Jesus called James and John.  Again, they immediately left their father, Zebedee, and the family business to follow Jesus.

Jesus told Simon the purpose of the call: to make them fishers of men.  To follow Jesus is to think of others.  We initially come to Jesus for ourselves.  We hear of His love and we want it for ourselves.  As soon as we receive it and begin our journey following Jesus, we realize we can’t be selfish with His love.  We soon come to complete understanding—God so loved “the world.”  He loves me, and He loves everyone I will come in contact with.  I am called by Jesus to follow Him and that leads to helping others follow Him.

We also note that these men left their old life and immediately followed Jesus.  The call demands immediate and complete obedience.  What was it about Jesus that caused these hardened fishermen to drop everything and follow Him?  It is hard to describe or understand until we receive that inner call.  This call includes a divine inner confirmation of truth.  We just know that we know: This is real.  Once you’ve heard His call, be quick to follow!

Father, thank you for calling me to follow you.  I will leave all that hinders my walk with you.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
