Conversations of the Incredible Family
Sexual Desire
Scripture Reading: 1 John 2:14-17
Key Verse: 1 John 2:16
For everything in the world–the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does–comes not from the Father but from the world.
We must not leave the subject of crucial conversations without dealing with our God-given sexual desires. There are a couple of different conversations that pertain to this area of our lives. The first area is the crucial conversations between husbands and wives. It seems to me that, after 35 years of counseling couples, there are two common topics that cause lots of tension: money and sex. These two topics are so critical to the happiness of a marriage and yet so tough for couples to discuss. Men and women approach sexual intimacy so differently that to expect that area of our lives to go well without good communication is unrealistic. If you have not had these crucial conversations with your spouse, I would encourage you to break the ice and start that conversation. If you don’t feel you can, seek Godly counsel from a Christian counselor.
The other side of this crucial conversation is with your kids. The best answer I’ve heard about when to have this conversation is when they ask questions. Parents need to take deep breaths and have these conversations with complete honesty. The question is not whether your kids will get answers to their questions of sex, they will. The question is who will be giving them the answers! I think most parents would want to be the source of their kid’s answers. However, most parents hesitate to have these crucial conversations. By the time your kids are in junior high, they need some answers. Be there for them!
Father, I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Help me to honor you by living a pure and holy life. Give me wisdom and courage to have the crucial conversations needed in my family. In Jesus’ name, amen.
