Incredible families are continually sensitive to the needs of one another

Conversations of the Incredible Family
Unwholesome Talk – Part 1

Scripture Reading:  Ephesians 4:25-32

Key Verse: Ephesians 4:29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is challenging Christ followers to allow Christ to show up in all areas of their lives.  He wrote: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires” (Ephesians 4:22).  Once Christ has been invited into our lives, we must learn a new way of walking and talking; it takes some time.

In our printed key verse, Paul reminds us that God’s people work hard not to allow any unwholesome talk to come out of your mouths!  Incredible families understand this as they work on making their homes a safe place for all members.  In Paul’s thinking, the opposite of unwholesome words is encouraging words; “building others up according to their needs.”

Take note of the apostle’s phrasing: according to their needs.  Incredible families are continually sensitive to the needs of one another.  Ungodly families focus far more on their own needs than each other’s.  This selfish approach causes all kinds of unwholesome conversations.  When frustrations come up, and they always do, each family member must take a deep breath and slow the conversation down.  Christ followers know to be very careful not to give the devil a foothold in their home by allowing unwholesome talk!

Father, I want the words that come out of my mouth to glorify you and encourage those around me.  Grant me your divine help.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
