Word Power – Part 2

Scripture Reading:  Matthew 12:33-37

Key Verse:  Matthew 12:36

But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

Yesterday I made a statement that needs further study: Words are icons representing realities in our hearts.  The truth of that statement comes from Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:35 – “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”  Our words are like the icons on our computer screens, when activated they reveal what is going on in our “hard drives.”

When we walk around with issues on our minds that need to be talked about, they will come jumping out of our mouths at all the wrong times if we don’t settle them.  Our harsh words may be coming out when someone spills the milk, but the reality is: deeper issues need to be talked about!

The heart is the center of life; it pumps life giving blood to our bodies.  The Bible uses the term “heart” when referencing the spiritual matters that are critical to God.  For example, the Bible tells us to “guard our heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23).  Jesus wants to transform our spiritual hearts—the center of our passions for life.  He wants to make us good so good things come out of our mouths.  Jesus didn’t come to earth to show us better self-control.  Jesus came to change our inner beings so we desire the good and wholesome values of God’s kingdom.  When our hearts are good, our words will reveal it!

Father, change my heart by your powerful grace.  Make me good from the inside out!  May my words always represent a heart transformed.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
