The Test of a Loser
The Purpose of Life – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:26-34
Key Verse: Matthew 6:25
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
In our printed key verse, Jesus asks us a question and I think each of us should answer it personally. His question is asking us about what we think life is all about. His question probes the age old question: What is the meaning of life? Jesus wants His followers to live the deeper purposes of life than an unbeliever will live. I will repeat His question in our modern vernacular: Is your life more important than the material possessions you accumulate?
The test of a real “loser” is whether he loses the values of this world. Losing weight is a high value of this world; thus the TV show, “The Biggest Loser.” The highest value of a Christ follower is following Christ; doing life like He wants us to! I fear that many Christians, if they were being honest, would answer Jesus’ question with a “no.” No, life is not more than accumulating stuff. For them, life is about making money and spending money. There have been millions of people who, over the ages, have sold their souls to simply have more money.
Let’s be honest, if giving God and His kingdom 10% of your income seems wildly extreme to you, it reveals your values. Your life is all about making and keeping money for you and your family. By the way, the average American keeps 97.5% of their income and gives 2.5% to charity.
Father, I do not want to be average when it comes to giving to you what is yours. I want my life to be about you and blessing others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
