Series: “The Biggest Loser”
Today: “Who Is A Loser”
Scripture: Matthew 10: 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Colossians 3: 5-10 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Intro: One of the most popular reality shows on TV these day is called __The Biggest Loser__.
It is from this show that we get the title for our __The Biggest Loser__ series.
A. Many feel accepting Jesus as Lord-they are__losing__.
B. Jesus sets the record straight in Matthew 10:39: Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
I. A LOSER MUST CHANGE HIS __VALUE__ SYSTEM.
A. Matthew 10:39a says, Whoever finds his life will lose it.
The Greek word for “find” is “heurisko.” This literally means “one who finds his life by: acquiring, getting, obtaining, or accumulating.”
Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
B. Question: where am I _finding_ my life?
The word “life” that Jesus uses in the Greek is “psuche.” This means a “set of feelings, desires, or affections.”
II. A LOSER MUST WATCH THEIR __INTAKE__.
Colossians 3:5-10 list’s the worlds__junk__ food: Sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language, lying.
Three tactics to fight off bad “intakes.”
A. Put it to__death__- (whatever it takes).
B. You must __get rid of it __ yourself – (get to work).
C. Do not _give up__ – (no excuses).
Psalm 139: 23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Question: Will you be a _biggest loser_ this month and this entire new year?
Three helpful steps:
- Prayerfully determine what you need to lose. What is God convicting you of?
- Get rid of anything that feeds or empowers what you need to lose.
- Get an accountability partner to walk with you and pray for you.
