With God’s Spirit in us we also have the freedom and ability not to sin

Embrace His Death and Resurrection
Our Resurrection – Part 2

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:9-17

Key Verse: Romans 8:1

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Continuing our study from yesterday’s devotional, we want to know how it is possible to keep our lives free from sin—sin as defined in the New Testament.  (See yesterday’s devotional for that definition.)  This holy lifestyle is accomplished by the work of God’s Spirit in our inner beings!  Our printed key verse says: The Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit that gives us life.

When the Spirit of God is in full control of your life, you will live as God wants you to.  Paul writes in verse 13: “For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”  We can be strong enough, as we surrender to God’s Spirit, to live without daily saying no to the Spirit’s nudges.  Your fleshly cravings do not have to be in control of you!  You can be filled with God’s Spirit, daily saying yes to Him in every decision.  Do we have the freedom and ability to sin?  Of course!  But with God’s Spirit in us we also have the freedom and ability not to sin.  If that is not true, the scriptures are not true and we are to be pitied for serving an impotent God.

I am a living testimony that God is not impotent and is able to “equip me with everything good to do His will” (Hebrews 13:20-21).  I can live without intending to say no to God’s will at any given moment.  So can you!

Father, I praise you for being more powerful than the enemy of my soul.  I will live out today obeying your Spirit’s nudges.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
