Jesus’ Second Coming should encourage God’s people to live lives worthy of Him

Embrace His Second Coming
Scoffers

Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 3:1-7

Key Verse: 2 Peter 3:3

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.

The Apostle Peter wanted to write a second letter to God’s people to remind them and stimulate them to wholesome thinking.  One of the first things he wanted to remind them of was the second coming of Jesus.  Peter knew that it was this event that should encourage God’s people to live lives worthy of Him.  It is the second coming that encourages us to endure the hardships, knowing it will all be over someday.

Writing under the anointing of God’s Holy Spirit, the Apostle Peter predicted that in the days before Jesus’ coming scoffers would grow in number and intensity.  A scoffer is one that expresses derision for something or mocking words toward an event.  These scoffers will think and talk with a human understanding of God and have no spiritual understanding.  They will not understand the timelessness of God’s world and will start questioning prophesy.  “Where is this coming He promised?” will be their chant.

When I think of our present world, people simply don’t speak of Jesus’ second coming.  This event is ignored by most, even in the church.  I think this ignoring is the worst form of scoffing.  It is a form of mocking God and His word.  If I’m right, then His second coming may be closer than we think!

Father, forgive us for not looking for Jesus’ return.  Forgive us when we ignore this promised event.  May my life be lived in a worthy fashion today.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
