What the Voice Speaks
The Voice of Contentment
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 6:7-10
Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:6
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
If God’s people are listening, they will hear God’s voice speaking of the great gain contentment brings. Our printed key verse speaks clearly to all who will listen. God wants to bless His people, we all believe that. But God’s definition of blessings and our definition of blessings are too often vastly different.
Material things are the dominant thoughts for too many of us. Our world influences all of us to want more. No matter how much we have, we still want more. A thriving business in our society is the self-storage buildings. We have so much stuff that we go rent more space to put stuff that we own but don’t use. Today, shows on hoarders may astonish us at their extremes, but the truth is most Americans are hoarders. The word “contentment” doesn’t fit into our vocabulary very often!
God’s voice calls out to us. It reminds us that contentment is where we actually gain. We gain that which will last into eternity. Our stuff in storage bins will all be gone, but our life and our family’s lives will live into eternity. Learning to enjoy those around you rather than the things around you will be great gain. Longing for riches plunges us into ruin and destruction, according to the apostle (vs. 9). Look closely at those that have run after riches and see the revealing truth. Let’s learn to be content and enjoy the life God has given us.
Father, help me to live contented. Remind me not to crave the things of this world. Keep my eyes fixed on you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
