Hearing His Voice
A Personal GPS – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 30:19-26
Key Verse: Isaiah 30:21
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
We live in an amazing time of technology. Most of us have been given directions by our GPS. The voice in that little box speaks to us while we drive. When we get off track, he or she finds an alternate route to get us to our destination. Smart phones allow an app that gives us our own personal GPS that is with us all the time. If we need direction, all we have to do is open our cell phone and obey its commands.
As you read our scripture for today, you will see that God is offering to be Israel’s personal GPS system. Wherever they are, whenever they get to a crossroad, God’s voice will be heard: “This is the way; walk in it”! As most scholars will point out, many of these prophecies have a double meaning. One is for those that were living when Isaiah was inspired to write these words, and secondly, they point toward Christ. In other words, we can claim this promise for our lives if we have Christ in us. The presence of the Holy Spirit in us gives us our personal GPS. He, the third person of the Trinity, will guide us, speaking direction into our lives as we come to the many crossroads of our lives.
Our scriptures make it clear what our responsibility is: “walk in it.” Will we be faithful to follow? That is the question.
Father, I want to hear your voice of direction. I commit my obedience in following your commands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
