Hearing His Voice
Sheep Listen – Part 2
Scripture Reading: John 10:1-6
Key Verse: John 10:3
The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
Once again, today we return to Jesus’ illustration of sheep and shepherds. This was a common element in the society Jesus was living in. All those that listened understood the relationship that shepherds had with their flocks. The shepherd would call out directions and the sheep would follow. In Jesus’ day, there were many flocks, with their particular shepherds. The sheep of each flock would listen to the voice of their shepherd, not the voice of a shepherd from another flock.
In our scripture for yesterday and today, Jesus reminds us that it was He who opened the gate and invited in His sheep. They who entered in would become His flock—listening to His voice. Jesus describes the intimate relationship that we would have with Him: “He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out” (John 10:3).
The first thing we must ask ourselves is: Have we entered into the right “gate”? Jesus is that gate and no other name can be on that entrance gate. In other words, when we accept Jesus we are not accepting Him as one of several shepherds in our lives. Jesus demands to be the only voice in your life. He is the Great Shepherd and there are no others that love and care for His flock like Him.
Father, thank you for sending Jesus, the Great Shepherd of our souls. I will devote my life to listening for His voice alone! In Jesus’ name, amen.
