Mission: Impossible
Love: The Glue – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Matthew 22:34-40
Key Verse: Matthew 22:36
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
One day an “expert” in Jewish law tried to trip Jesus up by testing His wisdom. This expert asked Jesus, “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Think about that question for a moment. This expert was asking Jesus to assign differing values to the commands of God. He was trying to paint Jesus into a corner—getting Jesus to say some commandments aren’t as important as others. If I was asked that question, I might have said that they are all of equal value.
Jesus never flinched and quickly answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all you soul and with all your mind.” Jesus knew that when a person obeyed that command, all the others would fall in line automatically. Nothing is more important in our lives—nothing—as continually growing our love for God. We do that by reading and obeying His teaching in the Bible. We do that by daily praying and praising. We grow our love as we gather with other believers and worship Him together.
Our mission must have this foundation: We love God with our whole heart, soul and mind. This makes us effective in sharing our faith. Jesus reminded His followers that when we remain in Him, with this fully devoted love, we will be fruitful! (John 15:5).
Father, I want to grow my love for you every day. I will give myself to that task. You have my heart, soul and mind! In Jesus’ name, amen.
