Serve – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Mark 10:41-45
Key verse: Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Let’s continue our study from yesterday’s devotional by getting practical. What does it look like in everyday life to be a servant? In Jesus’ day it was a common sight to see servants going about their daily duties. They never had a day off nor took vacations. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week these servants faithfully served their masters.
We struggle to understand the true concept of servant hood that Jesus calls us to. We live in a country that demands its rights. Servants have given up their rights. Christ followers must continually remember that life is not all about us. When a waitress doesn’t get your order just right, what attitude do you show her? When a car cuts you off on the highway, what spirit comes out of you? When your spouse doesn’t judge you fairly or treat you kindly—from your perspective—how do you react? (Remember, a servant in Jesus’ day didn’t ask if he was being treated fairly. He simply went about his duties to serve.)
Let’s be honest. It is not easy to live out a servant’s life. Our flesh will fight against this Christ like attitude of responding with kindness and service to those who mistreat us! This is where the “rubber meets the road” in being a Christ follower. We must actually follow our model. Our model is Jesus!
Father, I will need your help to fight my pride and fleshly desire to demand my rights today. Help me to represent you in all my ways today! In Jesus’ name, amen.
I see here you’re talking about how we need to live a God-centered life instead of a self-serving life – this article really drives the point home http://churchleadershipblog.com/2011/09/bad-medicines-pastors-are-using/ it’s as if you’re writing the same thing
