Jesus didn’t promise that we would always “want” to give cups of cold water

Scripture Reading:  Matthew 10:32-41

Key Verse: Matthew 10:42

And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

Jesus came as the hope of the world and wanted His followers to carry His message of hope to our world.  Throughout His teaching we find several methods that we can use to complete our mission.  In today’s printed key verse we read one of those methods: contributing cups of cold water.  In other words, this means giving people around us small deeds of kindness.  It is these acts of love and kindness that point to the One who gave His all for that person.

Jesus added the phrase to this method: “Because he is my disciple.”  In giving our “cup of cold water” we do it because we follow Jesus.  That means that there will be times when giving someone assistance goes against our natural desires.  Be aware that there will be times when you don’t really want to help someone, if you are totally honest.  But, as Jesus’ disciples, we do it anyway because we do want to please Jesus.  They may feel like you’re being a hypocrite but, in truth, you are being a faithful follower of Christ!  Jesus didn’t promise that He would always make us want to give that cup of cold water, but he did promise us a reward for our efforts—every time.

Our Father in heaven is watching and recording in the books of heaven our every behavior and word (Matthew 12:36).  Be ready today to contribute in Jesus’ name.

Father, I am determined to help the helpless and serve the hurting around me today.  I will do it in obedience to your call on my life!  In Jesus’ name, amen.
