What We Believe About Heaven
Old Order Gone
Scripture Reading: Revelation 21:1-9
Key Verse: Revelation 21:4
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
The Apostle John was given a tour of heaven, at least glimpses of part of it. What he did see he struggled to describe. John used earthly comparisons to help us understand how incredible heaven is. He used terms like, “walls of jasper, city of pure gold, as pure as glass and twelve gates made of pearl.” In other words, John was using every precious stone known to man to help us understand what is waiting for the faithful!
Our printed key verse tells of the greatest news for us: “No mourning, crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Sitting on His throne, God proclaimed that He was “making everything new” (verse 5). If you are hurting in any way today, this is good news. Your hurt, whether it’s physical, emotional or mental, is part of the old order and will not travel with you into heaven.
The old song reminds us: Heaven is a wonderful place, filled with glory and grace. All negative thoughts, all negative experiences, and all painful memories will be gone forever! This life gets discouragingly painful, but we have much to look forward to! It seems long in coming, but hang on—God lives in a timeless world. Time was a created thing belonging to this “old order.” In God’s new world, we will experience life without limits and beauty without end! Get excited about heaven!
Father, grant me your endurance and patience as I live this life on earth. Someday I long to step into your eternal world. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
