Authentic Leaders Lead at Home
Compassion
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:19-24
Key Verse: Philippians 2:20
I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare.
The Apostle Paul was commending young Timothy because he slowed life down enough to take genuine interest in others. That is a rare characteristic that is so needed in all relationships. No amount of talent can make up for a lack of genuine interest. That doesn’t mean that if our interest in someone doesn’t come natural, it’s not genuine. We choose our values and we can choose to value someone even if it isn’t natural.
In our homes this kind of interest is extremely important. Fathers have a special challenge in this area. Men tend to focus on results, not relationships. But we can be intentional about our relationships and make the decision to give genuine interest in our family members. Someone suggested that the average father spends less than two minutes a day with his children in serious conversation. If that is even close to being true, our homes are in trouble.
God is calling men to be the authentic spiritual leaders of their homes. That doesn’t mean to walk around commanding respect. It means walking around demonstrating compassion; showing interest in the needs and interests of the family members. Our homes are desperate for leaders that truly lead in Christ like ways! Men, will you accept your assignment?
Father, open my eyes to the needs of my family. Help me be less concerned about me and more about them. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
