Authentic Leaders Lead at Home
Men Like Him – Part 1

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:25-30

Key Verse: Philippians 2:29

Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him

As I was reading the Apostle Paul’s words about a man that had been serving alongside Paul, the phrase “honor men like him” caught my eye.  His name was Epaphroditus. He was a minister of some sort from the community of believers in Philippi.  This group of believers had taken a love offering for the Apostle Paul and sent Epaphroditus to deliver it.  He stayed a while, due to some sickness.  Paul had been able to get acquainted with him and was obviously impressed with his heart for leadership in the kingdom of God.

For the next few days, I want to look at the characteristics of authentic leadership.  In particular, I want to focus on these characteristics as they play out in our homes.  In my opinion, the home is foundational; if we get it right there, we will probably get it right everywhere else.  I think what Paul saw in Epaphroditus are characteristics that we can use to help us live out our faith, first, in our homes.

The first thing we learn about Epaphroditus is that he was a believer—a brother in Christ to Paul (verse 25).  Here is the basic ingredient to everything needed at home.  When anyone truly is a believer, the Holy Spirit lives in them and thus can guide and direct them.  Being sensitive and obedient to God’s Spirit within us will lead us to being the authentic leader we need to be in our home.  (Continued)

Father, I know your Spirit lives in me; guide me today.  Help me to love my family consistently and honor you in all my ways.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
