Today: “Authentic Leaders Are Led”

Scripture:  1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.  32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God– 33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

Intro:  The best one word definition of a leader:     influencer    .

A.   The question is not: will you influence others?  The question is: will it be    positive     influence.

B.   Good leaders are the ones who are good     followers     .


A.   The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:1:

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children

B.   Three facts about imitation:

1.   Imitation is     less      than the real thing.

2.   Imitation can be done in spite of     feelings      .

3.   Imitation points to the       real     .


A.   For a follower to become a good leader, he needs to spot patterns—patterns of behavior.

1.   Some patterns must be      avoided      .

Romans 12:2a Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. 

2.   Some patterns must be      initiated        and       maintained      .

Romans 12:2b Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

B.   Understanding patterns.

1.   Patterns are about a      series      of events, not sporadic behavior.

1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

2.   Patterns form     character      .


A.   We must start by being good listeners to what __Jesus__ had to say!

John 14:26  But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

B.   Are you growing your listening skills?

1.   Read the Bible to learn, not for       brownie          points.

2.   Write down new       thoughts        that come to mind while reading.

3.   Be       obedient       to whispers or nudges.

Conclusion:  Authentic leaders are led away from ___stumbling___ blocks.

2 Corinthians 6:3 We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.

* Authentic leaders that want to be positive influencers will       deny      themselves before they would cause harm to those who are watching.
