Some people bond to God only by heritage not by “heart.”

The Path to Second
The Path of Heritage

Scripture Reading:  Romans 9:31-33

Key Verse:  Romans 9:30

What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith

One of the toughest challenges the Apostle Paul faced was convincing those of Jewish heritage that they still needed to put their faith in Jesus Christ.  The Jews have a long heritage of being people of God.  From the time God called Abraham, each generation put their confidence in their relationship to Abraham.  Unfortunately, God was not looking for people who were only connected to Him by their heritage.  God was in relationship with Abraham and wanted that relationship to continue.  Unfortunately, the Jewish people lost that relationship over the years.  Their bond to God is only by heritage not by “heart.”

It is true in many parts of our world today: people claim their connectedness to God simply by heritage.  We in the Christian church may not say it exactly in the same way, but we ourselves can lean too heavily on heritage as well.  Maybe you know someone who clings to the fact that their parents were solid church members.  Possibly a person might put their confidence in their own long-term membership in a church or position of leadership.

We must continually remind ourselves that God isn’t looking at past attendance records.  God longs for an up to date passionate heart that loves Him more each and every day!  This path is found in Jesus only!

Father, grant me your wisdom and revelation that I might know you better.  I am blessed by our relationship!  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
