Foot Washing – Part 2
Scripture Reading: John 13:12-17
Key Verse: John 13:14
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
As we continue from yesterday’s lesson we need to make modern day applications to the truths we’ve learned. Some churches actually practice literal foot washings. They gather in a room and take basins of water and wash each other’s feet. I don’t think there is anything wrong with this ceremony, but I do think they are missing the point if it stops at this ceremony.
Jesus was making the point of servant hood. The foot washing was that society’s need and provided Jesus the illustration He needed. What He hoped the disciples would get was a servant’s heart. He wanted them to leave that room and be aware of all the needs around them; meeting the needs in other’s when possible.
Are you willing to live this day with your eyes wide open, scanning for the needs of hurting people around you? God’s Spirit within you will confirm the needs He wants you to step up to! God knows we can’t do it all, but He also knows what we can do. He will judge us on what we actually did, not just “good intentions.” Let’s make a covenant with God for today. Let’s be ready to serve someone as God directs us. Close this devotional with the suggested prayer letting God know you are ready and willing to serve!
Father, I am your servant. I will serve those around me that you open my eyes to today. Use me to your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
