God’s Covenant:
Our Part
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:11-15
Key Verse: Matthew 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
If you remember, the definition of a covenant is two or more people entering into a solemn and binding agreement. In the last two days we have studied God’s part of the covenant. Today we begin the study of our part of the covenant. Though we do nothing to earn the right of the covenant, we do have a part to play.
God appeared to Abraham and explained Abraham’s part of the covenant in Genesis 17:1 – “…I am God almighty, walk before me and be blameless.” Abraham’s part of the covenant was to faithfully walk, or live, his life as if God was physically walking right beside him. If Abraham would visualize that, he could be blameless before God.
Our part of the covenant is to walk before God in a way that we are conscious of God’s presence. When we do that, others will take notice of our changed lifestyle. In our scripture for today Jesus tells us to let our light shine before men, that they may see our good deeds and praise the Father in heaven. Jesus would spend the balance of His life on earth explaining how to live in order for our light to shine. Read Matthew, chapters 5-7 and you will find clear instructions on our part of the covenant. We can keep our part with God’s help.
Father, thank you for opening the door for me to enter your covenant. I will live for you so my light will shine bright! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
