God’s Covenant:
A Covenant – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Genesis 15:1-6
Key Verse: Genesis 15:18
On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates—
Yesterday we studied the covenant God made with Abraham. Today let’s look at our covenant. Ours starts with a simple faith in God Himself. Hebrews 11:6 tells us: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Do you believe God exists? If so, this sets up the possibility of a real God offering to you an abundant life here on earth and an eternity with Him in heaven.
The next step in forming this covenant with God is to receive His Son Jesus Christ. The Gospel of John tells us: “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). This is what is required of each person who would enter this covenant with God. It is not another form of religion but rather a living relationship with God. This covenant is not based on our merits, but on Jesus’ merits. This covenant is not created by good works by us trying to appease an angry God. The Apostle Paul clarifies this covenant: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). God rewards our faith with a gift of righteousness within us!
Father, I can never obtain the righteousness that you deserve on my own. I do believe and thank you for your gift to me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
