Feelings Are Fickle:
Drunk on Emotion
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 51:11-13
Key Verse: Isaiah 51:12
“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mortal men, the sons of men, who are but grass
Do you remember when your kids used to get so emotional that they were out of control? Maybe you know some adult that allows their emotions to run wild as well! I have often said, whenever anyone is drunk on emotion, they can no longer deal logically any more than someone drunk on alcohol.
Our emotions are powerful influences in our lives; we must keep them under control. Out of control emotions will lead to worse destruction than an out of control train. The Prophet Isaiah is writing to the people of God, reminding them that the Lord is their comfort. He then asks a question: Why let fear rule your life? In verse 13 the prophet answers his own question: They forget. Yes, when our emotions of worry, fear, stress, or depression take over, we tend to forget God. These emotions flood our minds and if we allow them, they will make us as illogical as a drunken man. We start painting the worst case scenarios and believing our own predictions.
We can take control of our fickle emotions. We can recall the power of God. We can remember all that God has done for others and for us in times of need. When you start getting all emotional, catch yourself and demand faith to conquer your emotions. Our minds are the control centers of our lives. Out of our thoughts flow our emotions. Our emotions reveal what we have been thinking about!
Father, I am determined that I will focus on you and your faithfulness. Thank you for stabilizing my emotions, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
