We are not alone in writing our story. We are God’s workmanship!

Power of the Key Story:
Cloud of Witnesses

Scripture Reading:  Hebrews 12:2-6

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

The Hebrew writer reminds us that as Christ followers we are examples to those who watch us.  This section of scripture is referring to the Greek Olympic games that were so popular in that day.  Many eyes were watching the ones who were competing closely!  The term “cloud” was used frequently in Greek and later to express a great number of persons or things.  The writer wants us to understand that many people will view our lives over our lifetime.

Since this is true, we are told to carefully examine our lives and lay aside anything that hinders our passion for Christ.  Our story is open-ended and only concludes when we pass from this life to the next!  So we must make sure that our story ends strong!  The Hebrew writer tells us to run the race with perseverance!  The Greek word for perseverance indicates a steady, patient run with God.

Please note the phrase: “the race marked out for us.”  Our story is really God’s story.  Our race has been marked out for each of us.  We are God’s workmanship, according to Ephesians 2:10.  God has been working on your story long before you realized the story of your own life and its significance to God’s kingdom.  This is both exciting and a responsibility.  Exciting as we realize God’s involvement and a responsibility as we realize our need to share!

Father, thank you for being in my story!  Thank you for your mighty power that unfolds it!  I will share the story as you give me opportunity.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
