The Power to Focus:
Be the Director – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:1-8
Key Verse: Romans 8:5
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
As we continue our study of Romans 8:5 we want to ask the “how” question. Yesterday we looked at the command, now we must strategize on how to be obedient to God’s Word. The whole question is about our power to focus. When the flesh or the evil one puts a thought into our minds that is contrary to the things of God, can we do anything about it?
Our scripture is clear that the mind controlled by the Spirit can control the thoughts that linger. God allows the evil one to suggest evil thoughts but does not give him the power to victimize us with these thoughts. We have the power to focus on what we choose. When a thought comes to mind, our spirit that is redeemed by God can step up and evaluate its value. If the thought is evil, we can set or direct our minds to other things, thus eliminating the evil thoughts! We are the director! God empowers us with the position and ability to do the job!
Replacing the evil thought with scripture is always the best method to focus our minds. When you catch yourself thinking wrong thoughts, start quoting a scripture. If you can’t think of a scripture, start singing a worship song! You can and must redirect your thoughts before those evil thoughts linger too long and influence your behavior! God’s Spirit will help by reminding us, but it is our job to direct our focus. Take your responsibility seriously!
Father, I will do my job today with your power. I will direct my focus and think on the things that would please you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
